Obviously, people in early recovery are more vulnerable than folks who have been clean and sober for several years. Newcomers have not yet replaced their old habits — developed over years of using — with newer, healthier reflexes. There is a real possibility that being in a drinking (and perhaps drugging) environment could massively trigger a desire to use. This is also possible when we are further along in recovery, but by then most people have learned to deal better with situations that might be triggers.

Nonetheless, there is no reason that we can’t attend holiday parties with relative safety, so long as we follow some simple guidelines.

A Unique Experience

A man can never know what it is like to bear a child. If we can agree on that, then perhaps you’ll be able to follow along with me when I say that no non-addict will ever be able to understand exactly where an addict or alcoholic is coming from.

The experience of addiction is incomprehensible, on a gut level, to anyone who hasn’t been there. I can tell you that withdrawal from heroin, Oxycontin, methadone or other opiates is like the worst case of flu you’ve ever had, multiplied several times, and you still won’t really get it. You have not had the experience of anticipating flu, the way an addict has experience anticipating withdrawal. The anticipation of pain in the dentist’s chair is similar, I guess, but usually much worse than the actual pain, in my experience. The aversion of a phobic to the situations that trigger his panic attacks is similar, too. The experience of withdrawal is so frightening that an addict is unable to imagine risking it. It takes a powerful stimulus, often fear of death itself, to move most addicts away from the drug. In too many cases, even that doesn’t do the job.

The same is true of an alcoholic’s compulsion to drink. Even though the immediate process of drying out takes only three to four days, no one who has not experienced the emptiness and fear of the unknown that goes along with the withdrawal from alcohol (not to mention seizures and d.t.’s) is able to look a drunk in the eye and say, “Hey, I know where you’re coming from, and it’s going to be okay.” (Note: I use the terms alcoholic and addict interchangeably. Alcohol is just another drug.)

Post-Acute Withdrawal

Even after detox, addiction leaves its victims with deep deficiencies, physical, social and spiritual. It can take as long as two years for a person’s body and nervous system to approach normal again. Along with that comes the pressure of getting back on track: examining one’s life to see where the problems are rooted, digging them out, making amends for all the damage we did, putting up with the lack of trust (richly deserved, but nonetheless hard to take) that goes along with demonstrating to people whom you’ve wronged that you’re a different person. Finally, to be successful in sobriety, people in recovery have to learn to monitor their behavior–to recognize the danger signs of early relapse–because relapse doesn’t happen when we pick up a drink or a drug. It happens long before we finally get around to making it official.

Support Groups

The trust of an addict has to be earned, and recovery is a major credential. It’s most unlikely that anyone can provide the support needed to get through this process of change who has not been there–someone who can say, “See, I did it. You can do it too. I’ll help.” You don’t get that kind of credibility from books.

This isn’t to say that an addict’s loved ones and professional helpers aren’t an important part of her supports. They just aren’t able, all by themselves, to provide the range of help needed. These are the people who hard-wired each other’s buttons, and each can play a symphony on the other’s nerve endings without even realizing it.

Furthermore, the people close to the addict are likely in need of support themselves. Living with addiction or alcoholism for long periods makes the family just as loony, in their own way, as the addict is in his. Add to that all the anger, resentment, “gotchas” and other impediments to the relationship, and it’s clear that if Joe Junkie needs someone to talk to, Mrs. Junkie and the rest of the family may not be the best choices.

Two things are needed: distance from the problem and the ability not only to understand, but to convince the addict that you understand. Combat veterans don’t hang around with conscientious objectors for PTSD support, and it’s the same with us drunks.

Relapse Prevention

If you put Michael Jordan in a game and told him he could handle the ball but not shoot it, how long do you think it would be before Michael instinctively did what Michael does best? Eventually the pressure would be on, Jordan would see a way to relieve it, and he’d go for it without even thinking.

Addicts are the same way. It’s vital to remember that recovery from addiction, of whatever kind, is about keeping stress levels low until the necessary coping skills have been learned. Otherwise, when the fertilizer hits the propeller the addict is going to go for the old, proven means of relief without regard for what tomorrow brings. He hurts now! Saying that he’ll feel better soon is like the dentist saying, “It’ll only hurt for a few minutes.” Screw that: we want Novocaine! Just Say No isn’t part of it. Addicts and alcoholics turn back to drinking and drugging because it seems the best of the possible solutions at the moment. We’re at risk until we learn to trust the new solutions. Logic isn’t involved, and Earth People just don’t understand that.

Some people recover without all those meetings. It’s not all that common, but it does happen. Experience has taught those of us in the treatment field that recovering people who have a firm foundation in the 12-step programs are more successful, much more often, than those who do not. In matters of life and death, the smart bettors go with the best odds. That’s why we strongly recommend that newcomers go to all those meetings.

It’s why us old-timers need to go, too. It’s easy to forget where you came from.

We were honored by a comment from Chaz at Chaz Recovering, one of the best recovery blogs out there, in our opinions. He adds the following to the previous article. (Used with his permission.)

Hi Shel… thanks for this. I concur.

I have often heard said by many 12 step members that “The Program” is all we need. To them I would suggest, “speak for yourself”.

I was about 2 years sober and making good progress in recovery when it became very noticeable that I was frequently severely blue and moody. My wife asked if I would please consult a doctor. I was at the time under the care of a General Practitioner who specialized in addiction recovery. His main medical advice was participation in AA or other relevant 12 step program.

He did an initial assessment for physical damage due to drugs or alcohol and then monitored for about a year, but after that, he mainly directed us to 12 step. He essentially acted as a co-sponsor with medical knowledge to many of us.

So who better to take my blue funks to than him? This doctor is extremely cautious to diagnose depression to any of his patients because so many come to him claiming depression and requesting prescriptions. Which he feels is the natural thing for a recovering alcoholic or addict to do.

So he wisely refered me out for a second opinion to concur one way or other if I was truly suffering from clinical depression and if medication was the best approach for me. This referral landed me in the office of a wonderful psychiatrist who also mainly works with addicts/alcoholics, and he himself is one of us, having been sober some 20+ years.

He too was cautious to dispense prescriptions for anti-D’s. Again, chemical reprieve is what most addicts and alcoholics are knowingly or unknowingly wanting. So his approach was to exhaust all non-chemical approaches first. This led to a wonderful set of sessions on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. The outcome was an amazing lifting of the sad and anxious feelings that plagued me for most of my life. I practice CBT to this day and have the most amazing reprieve from sadness and worry that the rooms of AA were never able to give me.

Who knows what the originators of AA meant when they wrote the original material? We do know that the landscape of our culture has changed dramatically since the 1930′s. Each of us needs what we need. And frankly, I do not see that it is the rightful place of any AA member to tell another what he/she needs or doesn’t need medically or psychologically.

Some are well-intentioned. To be a little more blunt, some are busy-bodies. Some need to be needed so they dispense advice to feel important. AAs are all works in progress and a lot of us are still pretty sick. AA is there to help us get sober. Any other benefit is a bonus. So I caution AA advisors to stick to AA advice.

For me, my dysfunctions are multi-faceted. So I will seek recovery in the same way.

Ciao.

Chaz

Some of the people in the recovery fellowships are inclined to tell us that everything we need to recover can be found in the rooms of the fellowship, and that we don’t need anything but the Steps and a good sponsor in order to stay sober.

These people mean well, and their statements were pretty close to accurate back in the days when “therapy” meant years with a Freudian analyst who, most times, wouldn’t even tell you how you were coming along. Those sessions were expensive, and have lately been shown to have been of less value than one might have hoped. Back in “the day,” useful feedback was more readily available in a 12-step group than from many professionals.

Many do find that the rooms are all they need, but some of us may discover that we have issues beyond our drinking and drugging that could benefit from a little extra “outside help.” For example, some of us may have issues that were masked by alcohol and/or drugs, but that begin to plague us once we are clean and sober. Some of us may need skilled help to dig out things we have tried to forget. We may simply need to develop a level of trust with a professional that we are not able to reach with a sponsor or other person in recovery.

The current generation of addiction therapists are trained in ways that Dr. Freud never imagined. Most have a variety of treatment skills that can be matched to different client needs. A trained guide can help keep us on the track when our denial kicks in and we try to tippy-toe around important issues. Group therapy can be the source of unconditional love like we have never felt before. Finally, we may need a professional who can evaluate our issues and suggest other options.

It may very well be true that all you need is the fellowship of the rooms, and we are convinced that it is virtually impossible to remain in a healthy state of recovery without them. But some of us need — or want — more than that, and an experienced addiction therapist (perhaps also in recovery) can often help us cut right to the heart of our issues and save us a world of pain.
